CESPHN Gaza wellness and Resilience Project

Selfactualize Australia Ltd. was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health and Aging, CESPHN to design and deliver
Co-Design consultations with newly arrived refugees from Gaza; facilitate kite making and drumming activities with children; and conduct 13 cooking workshops.
The project culminated with the publication and launch of a Palestinian cookbook celebrating delicious, authentic, intergenerational recipes that connect all Australians through the art of cooking and sharing food.

The first edition of the book was limited to 300 copies, however, the E-book is available for purchase through this Link via Amazon. All proceeds from the E-book sales will directly support refugees from Gaza.

Self-Actualize Australia Ltd. was commissioned by CESPHN to design and conducted over 80 outreach Psychosocial assessments of newly arrived refugee families from Gaza. The scope of the work included; capacity building, medical referrals and assistance with service navigation and supporting connection and well-being.
The project was extremely well received by the audience and community and highly commended by STARTTS and by the funder; who referred to the project outcomes and the report as:
"Phenomenal in a short time frame; producing emotionally moving drawings from traumatised children, who witnessed a genocide in Gaza...provides clinical evidence of the urgent need for a whole of government response to this human tragedy".

This award presented to Nina by the Hon. Tony Burke MP for volunteering with the Gaza humanitarian aid relief effort; including facilitating and connecting people to services and distributing vouchers, toys, books and clothing to newly arrived refugee families from Gaza.
Nina was involved in high level pro-bono advocacy for widows, the disabled and single mothers, who were victims of the Gaza genocide with additional complex trauma and human needs.

2018-2019
CALD Complex Mental Health Project

The project was at the start of COVID and designed to incorporate 2 parts;
A- direct service delivery of phone counselling.
B- Capacity Building by providing training to 50 refugee mental health nurses in my trauma informed model of care; SELF CARE for refugee trauma to self-actualize.
This project was funded by SEPHN.
2017-2018
Self Care for Syrian refugees Project
The project was designed to incorporate 3 components;
1. outreach counselling at each participant's homes with their families.
2. weekly gender specific Beachwalk's and picnics.
3. Six monthly psycho-educational groups; where the cards were created after gender specific breakaway focus groups.

The six topics delivered in Arabic with a teacher and AMHSW included;
- Recognizing trauma symptoms and management
- Mindfulness & emotional self regulation skills.
- Improving communication and family relationships.
- Structured Problem Solving Skills.
- Conflict resolution skills.
- Physical exercise for stress reduction and self care.
The women's walking group was lead by Nina while the men's group was lead by a male exercise physiologist, who was especially employed to engage the men during the focus groups and breakaway sessions
